The liberal arts is a mode of teaching any branch of knowledge; this mode is based on broad foundations and, critically, student choice of branch or “major.” The “foundations + branch choice” concept is widely used in global universities (e.g. MIT).
Open to already-admitted undergraduates at IIT Bombay, the Liberal Arts, Sciences, and Engineering (LASE) program allows students to access any branch of knowledge at IIT Bombay after their first year.
At the end of the first year, undergraduates can attempt a branch change. Now they have one more option: switch to the LASE program and then choose from one of five branches of knowledge or concentrations:
- Natural Sciences
- Engineering Sciences
- Social Sciences
- Art & Design
- Custom Concentration
The process is simple:
Step 1: take the LASE exam and interview at the end of your first year. If you are one of 30 to get selected, go to Step 2
Step 2: take 5 Foundation Courses in Semesters 3 and 4 plus any electives of your choice
Step 3: by the end of Semester 4, choose any of the concentrations to work on in Semesters 5 to 8
Students will graduate with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in their chosen concentration.
